Exploring VERTU's Iconic Connection With the River Thames

VERTU, founded in 1998, produced the world’s first luxury phone, and became known for its extraordinary design models and high-end customer service. VERTU was born in London, a city shrouded in rain and fog but alive with creativity and innovation. The Thames is not the longest river in England, but it is the most important. It flows through nine counties in the south of England, including Wiltshire, Oxford, Gloucestershire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Surrey, Essex, Kent and Greater London.

Since VERTU landed in London, British culture has been central to our brand. And for centuries, British culture has been fed by the River Thames. The Thames is derived from a Middle English term, Temese, which is also derived from the Brittonic Celtic name, Tamesas, which could mean “dark”. Flowing through Oxford, the River Thames was also called the Isis.

From London blossoming into one of the world’s greatest cities, to the iconic Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race, to Thames-inspired literary works like The Wind in the Willows, this majestic river gives life to Britain. This is why VERTU engineer Mark Darkin worked painstakingly to carve an image of the river onto the back of the Signature series.

In offering a tribute to the Thames, VERTU is also offering a tribute to British culture in all its glory. VERTU is using the unique design language to write about Britain we love: a country full of contrasts, uniqueness, and individuality. What we are doing is putting the Britain we feel in our designs, communicating the goodness of the British brand to the world, and writing our love of Britain into every product.
